ought five
a good year

051205

I think 2005 treated us well. I give thanks. My loving family is in good health. I was employed the entire year, and earned a good raise, too. Our home has proven to be a wise and dependable investment: no leaking roof, no vermin in the walls.
  • January - I bought my first new autmobile, a Saturn (safe, American) Ion Redline (fast), and have been pleased.. Unfortunately, I had to trade in my turbo MR2 for a car with four seats. Sniff.
  • February - Hmmm. I'm sure something happened in February.
  • March - Mikaela Valentine was born, healthy and with all the correct parts, and stayed that way. Unfortunately, Deb didn't make it into nursing school for the first lottery. There were 19 places with 220 applicants.
  • April - My software project was released to consumers, and my book was mentioned favorably in reviews.
  • May - Gabriel turned 4. We had a party, and he was pleased. Potty training continues.
  • June - Deb completed her spring quarter maintaining her 4.0 GPA.
  • July - Deb took the summer off from school. It seemed to be a tough decision, but I think it was for the best.
  • August - I turned 44. I had my first physical exam in 5 years, and was found to have abolutely NO terminal illnesses. Yay! (But don't ask me about losing weight...)
  • September - Deb didn't make it into nursing school for the second lottery. There were 17 places with 210 applicants.
  • October - Was not the best of months.
    • Gabriel was diagnosed with mild-moderate autism.
    • Thomas, longtime friend and poodgy cat, died. He was a stalwart companion of over a decade, in some ways more dog than cat. He will be missed. We interred him in rose petals.
    • I was rear-ended in my automobile.
    • My job became a bumpy road. Things evened out before November, but it was tough at the time.
I did decline a job offer where they said, “How about if we met your salary request? How much would it take?” This was a good ego boost, as well as a barometer of how things had improved at VMware..
  • November - Our first Thanksgiving with no guests, no travelling: just the family. We had all the iconic food: turkey, stuffing, green beans with crunchies on top, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes with gravy, and pumpkin pie for dessert. Somehow I convinced Deb to cook for just the four of us, and it's worked out great. In November, we also found a church that fits: enough singing, enough ritual, the right songs, inclusive language, and absolutely dead-on-target sermons.
  • December - Deb turned 16 again. She found $16 in her jeans, so she must be 16. Next weekend we'll get our tree. We attended a High Tea ceremony with Sophia. We have invitations to parties every weekend this month; we hope to attend many of them, and live to tell about it.
